iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: what changed and whether to upgrade

The main camera of the iPhone 18 Pro is the first with a variable aperture, f/1.48–f/4.0 instead of a fixed f/1.78. In practice that means better low-light shots wide open and depth-of-field control stopped down. There are manual Pro controls, a new sensor and processing. Video: 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps in cinematic mode and effects post-processing after capture. The front camera stays at 18 MP.

The A20 Pro is built on a 2 nm process with a Neural Engine twice as large, and memory moved off the die. Together with a new vapour chamber this yields up to 40 % more sustained performance: games and video editing throttle less.

Same body, same 6.3 and 6.9-inch displays, IP68, USB-C and MagSafe unchanged. Weight went up: Pro 211 g (+5), Pro Max 249 g (+16). The Dynamic Island is more compact and shows three Live Activities. New colours: black, silver, Glacier and Burgundy.

In the US the 256 GB iPhone 18 Pro costs 1199 dollars, 100 more than its predecessor; the 2 TB version adds 500. In Russia pre-orders opened at 141,000–199,990 roubles with 115,000–125,000 expected by November.

iPhone 17 Pro owners: no. Display, body and most features match, and camera and battery improve but not radically. iPhone 15 Pro and older: yes, two generations of change at once including the new Neural Engine behind iOS 27 features. If you shoot a lot in low light or video for work, the aperture and cooling are real arguments.

The iPhone 18 Pro is an evolution: a variable-aperture camera, a 2 nm chip and a battery a third larger on the Pro Max in the same body at 100 dollars more. Replacing a 17 Pro makes no sense; replacing a 15 Pro or older does.
