MiG-35 in War Thunder: the last MiG and what it brings to the game

Gaijin Entertainment has announced the MiG-35 for War Thunder: the rank IX Soviet/Russian jet fighter arrives in the Sky Odyssey update in September 2026. In the game it gets an AESA radar, up to eight R-77-1 missiles and precision weapons. In reality the aircraft became the last production fighter of the MiG company, built in six units.

The aircraft's history

The MiG-35 was presented in 2007 as a modernisation of the MiG-29M based on the carrier-borne MiG-29K. Its first flight took place on 24 November 2016. The production run was symbolic: four single-seat and two twin-seat aircraft. That closed the history of new MiG fighters, so the game release is in effect a monument to an entire design school.

For us this news is an example of how game studios tell a story: facts about the aircraft taken from real sources raise interest in the in-game model. The same technique works in any brand's content.

Weapons and avionics in the game

The developers promise a full set of modern weapons for rank IX.

  • Up to eight R-77-1 medium-range missiles with active radar seekers.
  • R-27T and R-27R medium-range and R-73 short-range missiles.
  • Kh-38ML and Kh-29L laser-guided missiles through the T-220 targeting pod.
  • Grom-2 glide bombs with satellite guidance.
  • Kh-35U anti-ship missiles with GNSS and Kh-31AD.
  • An AESA radar and an extended defensive suite with laser warning.

What to expect in battle

At rank IX radar and missiles decide, and the MiG-35 has both at the level of the best aircraft in the line: eight active-radar missiles allow engaging several targets, and the AESA resists jamming better. Against ground targets the aircraft becomes a multirole platform: laser and satellite weapons cover both tank battles and naval maps. The traditional MiG-29 weakness remains: fuel reserve and visibility on afterburner.

Summary

The MiG-35 in War Thunder is a top multirole fighter with a strong radar and a wide arsenal. For aviation history it is the last chapter of the MiG brand; for the game, one of the most versatile aircraft of the update.
